<dt.>
In the context of this thesis the temporal fluctuations of an intracavity frequency doubled solid state laser were regarded experimentally and numerically from two points of view. On the one hand the fluctuations should be suppressed with a simple electronic circuit, whereby appropriate analyses of a rate equation model were executed. The two orthogonal directions of polarization of the fundamental laser wavelength were fed back proportional-differentially to the pump rate. On the other hand the stochastic and deterministic parts in the fluctuations were separated from each other and examined individually. This is possible, if one can assume a description of the laser dynamics by an equation of Langevin type. The results of these investigations refer to a lowdimensional deterministic dynamics with stochastic parts. <engl.>
<dt.>
The thesis consists of three parts. In part one an introduction to the path integral Monte Carlo method (PIMC) and an overview on the experimental techniques for making nanoscopic semiconductor structures are given. Part two consists of two already published articles on the application of PIMC to nanoscopic quantum dots and quantum rings. In the case of quantum dots, shell effects and electron correlations for up to 12 electrons are studied. Furthermore, the addition energies are qualitatively reproduced using PIMC. In nanoscopic quantum rings, a parameter dependent transition between a spin ordered and disordered Wigner crystal is found. Further chapters are on the application of PIMC to quantum dot molecules and sodium clusters. It is shown that quantum dot molecules can be utilized to implement logical functions. PIMC is able to study the geometry of small sodium clusters, where the interaction between cores and valence electrons is modelled by a pseudopotential. The cores are treated as classical particles. Part three is on thermodynamic properties of finite systems and consists of three already published articles. While the first chapter of this part is about a recursion formula for the canonical occupation number, in the following chapters a new classification scheme for phase transitions in finite systems utilizing the zeros of the canonical partition function is introduced and applied to different systems. <engl.>
<dt.>
This cumulative dissertation consists of seven articles dealing with phase transitions of magnetic clusters or other finite systems. We show that phase transitions in finite systems, which can be experimentally seen only in floppy humps of the specific heat or the magnetic susceptibility, can be quantitatively described by an analysis of an optimized estimation of the probability distribution of the system states combined with Landau free energy, or by analyzing the partition function in the complex temperature plane, or other complex-time response functions such as the complex specific heat. We show that new efficient methods, such as the Ferrenberg analysis, not applicable to infinite systems, can be applied to finite systems, even if the systems have more than one external parameter. With an Optimized Multidimensional Data Analysis of histograms produced by canonical Monte Carlo simulations, we are able to compute the phase behaviour of finite magnetic systems over a wide temperature and magnetic field range just by determining observables at a few given temperatures and magnetic fields. <engl.>
<dt.>
In this thesis, signal processing strategies for the reduction of undesired interfering signals in binaurally recorded signals are derived and described. The properties of the different processing strategies are discussed and the processing performance is investigated using artificial signals. Two hearing aid algorithms are described that combine different noise reduction strategies and provide a complete processing of a simulated, digital hearing aid. Furthermore, a method is described and applied that allows for the optimization of 'critical' processing parameters with respect to the subjectively perceived signal quality. Finally, particular audiological properties of the algorithms are investigated and compared, i.e., the influence of the processing on signal quality and on speech intelligibility in noise is measured with hearing impaired subjects. <engl.>
<dt.>
This work considers the behavior of the Ising model of a ferromagnet subject to a strong, randomly switching external driving field. A formalism based on the master equation to handle such nonequilibrium systems is introduced and applied to a mean field approximation, and one- and two-dimensional variants of the model. A novel type of phase transition related to spontaneous symmetry breaking and dynamic freezing occurs which depends on the strength of the driving field. The complex analytic structure of the stationary magnetization distributions is shown to range from singular-continuous with euclidean or fractal support to all continuous. Analytic results are presented for the mean field and one-dimensional cases, whereas Monte-Carlo simulations provide insight into the two-dimensional model. Also, an interpretation of the model from a neurobiological point of view is given. <engl.>
<dt.>
This thesis introduces a solution to the problem of image restoration and feature extraction by incorporating new image models derived from statistical physics. Starting from Shannon's model of information processing, a special lattice spin Hamiltonian is used which is well suited for both source coding and for modeling information loss within the Bayesian framework. By applying a high-temperature expansion the parameter estimation problem is solved analytically using transfer-matrix methods. A Monte Carlo simulation restores the distorted image utilizing the statistical information about the source and the channel. Beyond its inherent practical usefulness the image restoration problem illustrates directly basic concepts related to information theory, statistical inference, and perception. The work is split mainly in two parts: Chapters 1 to 4 contain a summary of the problem and existing models, Chapters 5 to 7 introduce the new models and illustrate their capabilities in a variety of experiments. The conclusion can be found in Chapter 8. <engl.>

<dt.>
Head related transfer functions describe the physical properties that can be used by the auditory system to localize acoustical sound sources. At first, a measurement setup (TASP-System) is presented and validated in this theesis, that is capable of measuring HRTFs with a high spatial resolution and that can also be used for psychacoustic localization measurements. The physical properties of HRTFs and the effect of spectral smoothing on the physical localization cues are investigated in another section. In order to investigate the perceptual robustness of the auditory system to distortions of the individual HRTFs, psychoacoustics discrimination experiments are described, in which temporal and spectral properties of the HRTFs are varied. These experiments were conducted in non-reverberant and reverberant environments. Lastly, the effect of a monaural spectral cue in the spectrum of the sound source (that could be introduced by 'spectral scrambling') on the elevation perception is investigated. <engl.>
