In the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis hydrogen and carbon monoxide are converted to different hydrocarbons. By the addition of ammonia, the product spectrum (paraffins, olefins and oxygenates) contains amines, as well. The addition of ammonia leads to a decreased hydrogenation activity at the iron-based catalyst. This is caused by the reduced surface coverage of hydrogen due to the chemisorption of ammonia. Because of the activation of ammonia, it is incorporated in the organic products. The investigation of the reduction behaviour of iron oxides showed, that hematite is reduced to α-Fe with magnetite as an intermediate. If the temperature of reduction is higher than 570 °C, magnetite is reduced to wüstite. The introduction of different promoting elements (K, Mn, Pt, Ru or Zn) increases the degree of reduction of the iron and has a positive impact on the activity in the Fischer-Tropsch reaction (FTR). The degree of reduction, which means the presence of certain iron phase at the beginning of the reaction, only has a minor impact on the long-term activity of the catalyst in the FTR.

<dt.>
Herein, we report enhanced photocatalytic activity of mesoporous TiO2 powder and thin films towards degradation of organic pollutants in water due to their modification with zirconium. Catalysts were prepared by sol-gel and EISA methods while thin films were prepared using EISA via dip-coating. Characterization was carried out using different methods and effects of Zr on the morphology, structure, crystallinity and photoactivity of the catalyst investigated. Incorporation of Zr to Ti positions in the TiO2 crystal lattice enhanced charge separation, improved surface area, increased stability of anatase phase and controlled the crystal growth. Zr modified TiO2 catalysts showed higher photocatalytic activity compared to pure TiO2 catalyst. The results show that modification of TiO2 with Zr is a promising method in improving photocatalytic activity of TiO2 towards degradation of organic pollutants. <engl.>
