In heterogeneous catalysis, the hydrogenation of chemicals based on sustainable resources is a proclaimed goal. This purpose can be fulfilled by platinum catalysts additionally decorated with surface modifiers, like amines. These can direct reactants into otherwise unfavorable transition states to steer the catalytic selectivity of a catalytic process. In this thesis, a systematic analysis of chemical species that are formed temperature-dependent by amine adsorbates on reactive platinum surfaces will be presented by XPS. This was investigated on platinum thin films, nanoparticles, and full heterogeneous catalysts. Afterwards, strategies for surface contamination reduction and ligand exchange will be presented. For the oxide-supported catalysts, the reactive surface sites were identified by DRIFTS. Therein, amines were only allowing reactants to bind on highly-reactive low-coordinated surface sites.
First, the reaction behavior of vinyl, allyl and phenylacetylide complexes of tris(dicyclohexylamido) compounds of group 4 metals was investigated. Via time-resolved NMR studies, the formation of titana and zirconapyrrolidines from the corresponding vinyl complexes was observed, among others. Furthermore, the coordination behavior of variously substituted Cp2Ti(amides) as well as their behavior towards selected oxidants was investigated. By introducing 1-azaallyl or dibenzylamido ligands, the flexible coordination and reaction behavior of these ligands in alkylated and cationic titanium complexes was illuminated. The Lewis acidity of the obtained cationic complexes was investigated via NMR based methods and the different methods were compared. In addition, the formation of a diiminato ligand was found for the reaction of a cationic 1-azaallyl complex with p-fluorobenzonitrile.
In this doctoral thesis an STM-SNOM hybrid microscope was constructed, being able to simultaneously detect the tunnel current, and thus topographic information, and optical signals from identical surface positions. For this purpose, a procedure for the fabrication of optical fiber tips has been developed, which are characterized by apex radii at the nanometer scale at the one hand and are optically transparent, electrically conductive and mechanically robust at the other. First test experiments were carried out on ruthenium (0001) and titanium dioxide (110) single crystals, decorated with Ag nanoparticles as optically active elements. While the Ag-islands on Ru(0001) are optically active with respect to the surrounding substrate, the Ag particles on TiO2 appear darker in the optical maps, reflecting the absorptive character of underlying Mie plasmons. A spatial resolution of 1 nm could be derived from the optical maps.
Lithium-ion batteries are very prospective for future battery technology. SnO2 is a good choice as anode material due to its high theoretical capacity of 782 mA·h·g-1, its low potential of lithium release and up-take at just ~0.6 V vs. Li/Li+, and its high potential of about 3 V in combination with e.g. a LiCoO2 cathode. On top of this SnO2 is relatively inexpensive, non-toxic, electrochemically and chemically stable. The disadvantage of volume expansion-contraction during cycling can be overcome using SnO2 with ordered structural mesoporosity. The mesoporous structure increases the thermal and mechanical stability, minimizes the diffusion length for the Li+ ions and the large surface area offers a huge number of active sites for Li+ insertion. In this thesis SnO2 was synthesized by applying microwave irradiation. Afterwards the SnO2 was characterized structurally and electrochemically.
