The structure of ionic liquids (ILs) at interfaces is investigated. The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method is used to transfer defined IL-monolayers onto gold substrates. X-ray photoelectron spectra show that the anion of the original IL exchanges with anions from the LB-subphase solution. Polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy enables the assessment of molecular order. Quantum chemical simulations facilitate the interpretation of the experimental spectra. Monolayers of fluorinated, azolium-based ILs are investigated as water-repellant coatings. An aliphatic, imidazolium-based IL-monolayer serves as a model for the electrical double layer at Au(111) surfaces. Alkyl chains act as latent voids. The investigation of perdeuterated alkyl chains indicates the nanosegregation into polar and apolar domains. Due to anomalous capacitance-potential curves, an accumulation layer is postulated in aqueous solutions of ILs.

This book describes the physical basis of polarization modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy and its application in electrochemical studies. It provides a concise yet comprehensive review of the research done in this field in the last 20 years. Electrochemical methods are used to determine the rate and mechanism of charge transfer reactions between an electrode and species adsorbed or diffusing to its surface. In the past two decades PM-IRRAS has grown to be one of the most important vibrational spectroscopy techniques applied to investigate structural changes taking place at the electrochemical interface. The monograph presents foundations of this technique and reviews in situ studies of redox-inactive and redox-active films adsorbed on electrode surfaces. It also discusses experimental conditions required in electrochemical and spectroscopic studies and presents practical solutions to perform efficient experiments. As such, it offers an invaluable resource for graduate and postgraduate students, as well as for all researchers in academic and industrial laboratories.

In this thesis, electron transfer reactions were investigated in molecular systems with extended π-electron system. Firstly, redox activity and electronic transitions of [(Cp2Ti)3HATN(Ph)6] were studied. The voltammogram of [(Cp2Ti)3HATN(Ph)6] shows six oxidation and three reduction waves. Solution spectra of [(Cp2Ti)3HATN(Ph)6] and of the electrochemically formed oxidation products show transition in the UV, visible and the NIR ranges. In the second part, the electrochemical behaviour of seven derivatives of 2,5-diaminoterephthalate (DAT) was studied by cyclic voltammetry in dichloromethane. Correlation between the formal potential of first oxidation and the absorption or the fluorescence emission wavelengths are established for this specific type of dyes. In the last part of the thesis four derivatives of DATs, functionalized with lipoic acid, were assembled on the Au surface. The layers were electrochemically activated with a potential excursion to 1.15 V and 1.10 V. Subsequently, they show a surface-immobilized redox couple.
