<dt.>
In this work different approaches were pursued in order to control the performance of polymer:fullerene solar cells. Molecular doping was proposed to tune the electronic properties of a novel low bandgap copolymer. The effect of doping in the corresponding solar cells was also analyzed. The role of the active layer morphology of a reference P3HT:PCBM system was investigated by exploring the influence of a combination of solvents with different boiling points on the optoelectronic properties of the absorbers and solar cells. The effect of the device architecture on the performance was also addressed. In particular, inverted devices containing no ITO, water based buffer layers and low work function metals were fabricated. The effect of processing the devices in ambient air instead of under nitrogen atmosphere as well as the degradation of the active layer induced by exposure to oxygen and light on the optoelectronic properties of the P3HT:PCBM model system was investigated. <engl.>
