In the field of particle accelerator physics, one of the main topics of research is the development of high-performance electron sources. A promising class of materials for this purpose and the topic of this work are alkali antimonides. Based on density functional theory, the G0W0 method, and the Bethe-Salpeter equation we calculate the fundamental properties of a multitude of crystals. Furthermore, we present a theoretical framework to calculate the quantum efficiency of semiconducting photocathodes through an implementation of the three-step model based on many-body perturbation theory. To validate this model, we compare its results against experimental measurements for representative crystals and demonstrate a very good agreement between experiment and our theoretical representation. The results allow us to better understand the physics behind the measured spectral response and provide a pathway for the rational design of the next-generation of electron sources.
