This thesis demonstrates, that platinum-based nanoparticles can be synthesised by reducing Sn[N(SiMe3)2]2 in the presence of platinum seeds with different sizes. Intermetallic and tin-rich PtSn, PtSn2, and PtSn4 nanocrystals are produced and regulated by varying the Pt-seed size as well as the tin concentration. High Sn concentration and reaction times result in the emergence of hybrid nanoparticles with a PtSn4 crystal and an epitaxially grown Sn/SnOx crystal. Substitution of Sn[N(SiMe3)2]2 leads to the formation of PtIn2, PtBi2, and Pt-Zn nanoparticles whereas no Pt-Fe, Pt-Ni, Pt-Co, and Pt-Ga nanocrystallites can be produced. The nanoparticles are characterised by transmission electron microscopy for a first observation of their morphology. X-ray diffraction shows the composition of the nano-crystals, while energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and total reflection X-ray fluorescence analysis reveal the composition of single particles or the whole sample, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements are applied for the characterisation of the surface. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Fast Fourier transformation studies reveal the crystalline surroundings and thus, a platinum-rich subsurface layer. In combination with the results from the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, this implies a nanoparticle with an oxide shell of a tin-rich component and a platinum-rich subsurface layer.
This dissertation was part of the German-Dutch Interreg project GRÜNE KASKADE and deals with the conversion of agricultural residues (e. g. liquid manure) into mesoporous hydrocarbons by means of Hydrothermal Carbonisation (HTC). Various experiments are being carried out to achieve this goal. Extractive purification (e. g. ethanol) results in activated hydrochars with improved morphology. Furthermore, cosmotropic salts as well as chatropic salts from the Hofmeister series are used to influence the reaction medium. In addition, lignin-containing biogenic residues (e. g. coconut shells) are also tested as an additive for the HTC process. Besides, an enrichment up to 25 g/l of 5 hydroxymethylfurfurale (5-HMF) and 4.5 g/l of glucose in the process water is also possible by using a two step HTC.
Nanoparticles (NPs) are very important in various fields like photochemistry, electrochemistry, and catalysis. Although numerous studies have been reported on the redox chemistry and electrochemistry of NPs, the dynamics and kinetics of individual NPs at electrode surfaces are still poorly understood to date. For more clarification, the electrochemical reactivity of luminescent NPs has been investigated in this work on a platinum microelectrode (ME) surface using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). Single CdSe/CdS QDs with negative surface charge and Ag-Au NPs with cytidine shell were used as examples for semiconductor and fluorescent metallic NPs, respectively. The results show that QDs are irreversibly oxidized in aqueous solution. However, the correlation time and average number of particles retrieved from FCS suggest that the QDs do not lose their emissive properties in a single collision and desorb from the electrode surface without being decomposed significantly.
Lithium-ion batteries are very prospective for future battery technology. SnO2 is a good choice as anode material due to its high theoretical capacity of 782 mA·h·g-1, its low potential of lithium release and up-take at just ~0.6 V vs. Li/Li+, and its high potential of about 3 V in combination with e.g. a LiCoO2 cathode. On top of this SnO2 is relatively inexpensive, non-toxic, electrochemically and chemically stable. The disadvantage of volume expansion-contraction during cycling can be overcome using SnO2 with ordered structural mesoporosity. The mesoporous structure increases the thermal and mechanical stability, minimizes the diffusion length for the Li+ ions and the large surface area offers a huge number of active sites for Li+ insertion. In this thesis SnO2 was synthesized by applying microwave irradiation. Afterwards the SnO2 was characterized structurally and electrochemically.
