The automotive industry faces the major challenge of testing and releasing cooperative and automated vehicles. In order to support development accompanying tests while simultaneously considering the effects of cooperative and automated vehicles on traffic systems and vice versa, a generic simulation-based toolchain is proposed in this dissertation. The methodology allows for assessing and identifying critical scenarios that can be tested even during early development stages. A co-simulation framework is proposed for the verification and identification process. Therefore, a comprehensive simulation environment that combines a vehicle dynamics simulation, which consists of a digital prototype, a traffic simulation providing other test participants, and a cooperation simulation that includes cooperative features, is established. Finally, a novel approach coupling a real-world prototype with the afore mentioned traffic simulation, referred to as Prototype-in-the-Loop, is proposed.
