Scholars from several countries examine the topic of tolerance and its relation to democracy. The intellectual core of this book is based on several presentations from an international conference at the University of Magdeburg inspired by UNESCO's effort and supplemental articles that deal with the theme of tolerance in transition. This volume emphazises the challenges of intolerance such as nationalism, racism, xenophobia, and its presents different approaches to overcome scapegoating as well as excluding and differentiating among "others".
